Discover more about Shala River Trip

Komani Lake, an artificial lake created in 1979 by damming the Drin River, has become one of Northern Albania's most stunning tourist attractions. The hydroelectric dam, once called “The light of the Party”, is among the highest in Europe. The lake's creation flooded river valleys, resulting in the unique fjord-like scenery that draws visitors today. Cruising through the narrow, winding waterways, visitors are surrounded by towering mountains, steep canyon walls, and lush greenery. The lake offers access to the Albanian Alps, with opportunities for hiking and exploring the region's rugged beauty. The Shala River, known as the “Thailand of Albania” for its turquoise waters, is a popular destination accessible by boat from Komani Lake. Local villages around the lake provide a glimpse into traditional Albanian life. While the lake's remote location requires some planning to reach, the reward is an off-the-beaten-path experience filled with natural beauty and authentic hospitality.
