Discover more about Mesi Bridge

Nestled in the serene village of Mes, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit, meaning "the bridge in the middle") is a captivating stone structure that exemplifies Ottoman engineering. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, an Ottoman pasha, the bridge stretches across the Kir River and served as a vital link between Shkodër and the town of Drisht, as well as other northern settlements, facilitating trade and military movement towards Pristina. The bridge features 13 arches of varying sizes, giving it a unique and slightly irregular appearance. Its construction occurred in two phases: the initial phase included the central arch and one adjacent arch, while the subsequent phase added the remaining eleven. Spanning 108 meters in length, 3.4 meters in width, and reaching a height of 12.5 meters, the Mesi Bridge is one of the longest Ottoman bridges in the region. The bridge's architecture showcases traditional Ottoman elements, featuring rounded stones and stone plates. Today, the Mesi Bridge is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and scenic surroundings. The Albanian Development Fund has invested in the bridge to ensure safe access for tourists, allowing them to appreciate this cultural monument. Visitors can walk along the bridge, explore the riverbanks, and immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere of this historical site.
