Discover more about Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square (Sheshi Skënderbej) is more than just a public space; it's a living testament to Albania's rich history and cultural heritage. Named after the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the square stands as the main plaza in the center of Tirana. The square's origins trace back to 1917 when the Austrians constructed a public square in this location. After Tirana became the capital in 1920, the square underwent several transformations. During the Albanian monarchy (1928-1939), it featured a roundabout with a fountain. The square was further developed during the Italian occupation in a neo-Renaissance style. During the communist era, several cultural institutions were erected around the square, including the National History Museum and the Palace of Culture. After the fall of communism in 1991, the statue of Enver Hoxha was removed amid student demonstrations. In June 2017, a major renovation project was completed, transforming the square into a pedestrian-friendly area and earning the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2018. The square is now part of the biggest pedestrian zone in the Balkans. Key landmarks surrounding the square include the Skanderbeg Monument, the National History Museum, Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, and the Palace of Culture. The square also hosts various events throughout the year, including cultural festivals, concerts, and public gatherings. Today, Skanderbeg Square stands as a testament to Albania's evolving identity. It's a place where remnants of different architectural styles coexist, reflecting the dynamic spirit of modern Albania. The square serves as a vibrant hub, a stage for celebrations, protests, and everyday life.
