The Monumenti Kuvendi i Dukagjinit commemorates the Assembly of Dukagjin (Kuvendi i Dukagjinit), a pivotal gathering of Albanian leaders and nobles held between 1601 and 1602. The assembly convened in the village of Macukull, in the Mati region, with representatives from various Albanian districts. This convention aimed to organize a united front against the Ottoman Empire. The assembly, led by notable figures like Nikollë Bardhi, Gjin Gjergji, and Nikollë Mekajshi, brought together 2,656 representatives from thirteen Albanian regions. These regions included the highlands of Shkodër, Zadrima, Dukagjin, Kosova, Lezha, Kurbin, Mirdita, Mat, Dibra, Petrela, Durrës, Elbasan, Shpat and Myzeqe. The leaders planned a war for liberation and sought support from European states. Although they sent representatives to Venice to request aid, their efforts to gain substantial support were ultimately unsuccessful. The monument serves as a reminder of Albania's historical стремление to autonomy and resistance against foreign powers. While the precise location of the assembly is debated among historians , the monument in Macukull stands as a symbol of this important chapter in Albanian history. Today, visitors can reflect on the legacy of the Assembly of Dukagjin and its impact on Albanian identity and resilience.
