Discover more about Fir of Hotova-Dangëlli National Park

Fir of Hotova-Dangëlli National Park, the largest in Albania, spans 34,361 hectares in Gjirokastër County, extending towards Greece. The park derives its name from the Hotova Fir, a significant Mediterranean tree species. Its diverse landscape encompasses hills, mountains, valleys, canyons, gorges, rivers, and dense forests. The park's geological composition features Mesozoic and Paleogene limestones, with clay soils in wooded areas and calcareous environments around canyons, rivers, and springs. The climate is Mediterranean, with moderate, rainy winters and dry, warm summers. In winter, snow blankets the firs, while summer offers a refreshing escape from the Albanian heat. Historically, the area's first settlements were in caves used by Illyrians. Cultural monuments include the Frashëri Brothers Tower House and Museum, the Katiu Ottoman Bridge, and the thermal waters of Bënja at the entrance to Langarica Canyon. The Albanian government officially designated the area as a national park on January 15, 1996. The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including the brown bear, wolf, fox, wild boar, hare, squirrel, and wild goat. Deer are often seen in pastures and meadows. Aside from fir trees, the park also contains maple, black hornbeam, oak, red and black spruce, and raspberry trees. Visitors can explore the Langarica Canyon, known for its dramatic rock formations, waterfalls, and thermal pools. Hiking trails offer panoramic views, and camping is permitted in designated areas. The park is easily accessible and has no entry fee.
