Discover more about Manastiri i Ardenicës

Manastiri i Ardenicës, also known as the Ardenica Monastery, is an Albanian Orthodox monastery steeped in history and art. Founded in 1282 by Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos, its origins are linked to his victory over the Angevins in Berat. Legend claims a pagan temple dedicated to Artemis once stood here, giving the site its name. The monastery gained prominence in 1451 when Albania's national hero, Skanderbeg, married Andronika Arianiti within its walls. This event is said to have saved the monastery from demolition during the communist era. For a time, it served as an army barracks and tourist hotel before being reclaimed as a monastery in 1992. The Church of Saint Mary, the monastery's centerpiece, showcases Byzantine architecture with Romanesque elements. Inside, admire the frescoes painted in 1744 by the Zografi Brothers, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The complex also includes the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, monks' cells, and a carved wooden pulpit. The monastery is open daily, and visitors are welcome to explore its sacred spaces and learn about its history.
