The church is named after the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae near the Palace of Blachernae in Constantinople. It is believed to have been built upon the foundations of a ruined 5th-century church. The church dates mainly from the 13th century and features impressive frescoes and icons on its interior walls dating back to the 16th century. The paintings from the 16th century were primarily created by Nicholas Onufri, the son of Onufri, a renowned icon painter. The church has a rectangular narthex. As one of Berat's most important historical and architectural monuments, the church is a key tourist attraction. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.
