Discover more about Byllis Archaeological Park

Byllis Archaeological Park, located near Hekal, Albania, is a remarkable testament to the region's rich history, showcasing a blend of Illyrian, Roman, and Byzantine influences. Spanning 30 hectares, the site sits atop a hill 524 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Vjosa River valley and surrounding landscapes. Founded in the 4th century BC, Byllis was once the largest city in Southern Illyria and an important center during Roman and Byzantine rule. Legend suggests its origins trace back to Neoptolemus, son of Achilles, though archaeological evidence points to a later establishment. The city flourished as the capital of the Bylline community, evidenced by its impressive 2.2-kilometer-long walls. Visitors can explore the remains of the city walls, a theater that once seated 7,500 spectators, and the foundations of several basilicas. The city's strategic location made it a significant base during Caesar's campaigns and later a Roman colony named Colonia Iulia Augusta. During the 5th century AD, under Emperor Justinian, Byllis became an important religious center, marked by the construction of lavishly decorated basilicas. However, the city was sacked in 586 AD and subsequently abandoned. Today, Byllis Archaeological Park offers a unique glimpse into Albania's past, with ongoing archaeological efforts continually revealing more of its secrets. The park is generally open from 8:00 to 18:00 during the warmer months and offers a fascinating journey through history and culture.
