Parku Zoologjik i Tiranës, or Tirana Zoo, is a public zoo and the only one of its kind in Albania. Established in 1966, the zoo is located in the southern part of Tirana, nestled between the Grand Park and the Botanical Garden. Designed in 1959 by architect N. Radosllavov and engineer V. Maçugnaskij, the zoo was constructed between 1960 and 1961, and has served as a cultural, educational, and scientific venue for displaying various wild animals to visitors. Covering an area of 6.09 hectares (15.0 acres), the zoo provides a habitat for a variety of animals, including bears, lions, llamas, monkeys, wolves, foxes, and various bird species. The zoo's design includes green areas, water features, and pathways, offering a pleasant environment for leisurely walks and family outings. Playgrounds and recreational areas are available for children. While the zoo has faced criticism regarding the conditions in which the animals are kept , there have been efforts to improve the facilities. In June 2022, the zoo reopened after revitalization, offering larger spaces for the animals. Tirana's Municipality has announced intentions to expand the zoo into a park to create better conditions for the animals. Despite its shortcomings, the zoo remains a popular destination for local visitors and children.
