Ali Pasha Bridge: A Testament to Ottoman Engineering

The Ali Pasha Bridge, also known as the Dunavat Bridge, stands as a testament to Ottoman-era engineering in Albania. Constructed in the early 1800s under the commission of Ali Pasha of Tepelene, the bridge was part of an ambitious aqueduct system designed to provide a reliable water source for Gjirokaster Castle. At the time, the castle lacked a natural water supply, making the aqueduct a crucial infrastructure project. The aqueduct stretched approximately 10 kilometers, sourcing water from Mount Sopot. The bridge itself is made of stone, measuring 40 meters in length, 2.3 meters in width, and reaching a height of 16 meters. While most of the aqueduct was destroyed in 1932, this section remains, offering visitors a tangible link to the past. Today, the bridge serves as a pedestrian path, providing stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains. Located a short distance from Gjirokaster's cobblestone streets, the Ali Pasha Bridge offers an off-the-beaten-path experience. A roughly 30-minute walk from the city center will bring you to this unique site. The path to the bridge is scenic, passing through a small village and farmland. The bridge is especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset.
