    The most convenient way to reach Borsh Castle is by car. From the SH8 coastal road, a narrow asphalted road leads up the hill. The last part requires a 5-10 minute walk along a cobblestone path. Parking is free.

  • Public Transport

    To get to Borsh Castle from Saranda, take a direct minibus or any bus in the direction of Himara, Dhermi, or Vlora and get off in Borsh. From the village, you can hike up to the castle. The bus from Saranda to Borsh costs approximately 200-300 Lek.

  • Walking

    From the village square in Borsh, near the Ujvara restaurant, a hiking path leads up to Borsh Castle. The hike takes about 30 minutes. Follow the signs towards the castle. The path is steep in places.

Originally built by the Chaonians in the 4th century BC, the site has been inhabited and fortified through various periods, including the Byzantine era and the Middle Ages. Its strategic location made it a coveted prize, leading to numerous conflicts and reconstructions. In medieval times, it was referred to as Sopot Castle. The earliest written documentation of Borsh Castle dates back to the early 13th century. Over the centuries, the castle has been controlled by the Despotate of Epirus, the Republic of Venice, and the Ottoman Empire. Each power left its mark on the structure, contributing to the diverse architectural styles visible today. The most prominent remaining structure is the Hajji Bendo Mosque, built during the Ottoman period in the 18th century. Visitors to Borsh Castle can explore the extensive ruins, including the outer walls, the entrance gate, and remnants of various buildings and cisterns. The castle grounds occupy approximately 5 hectares, marked by large stone blocks. The climb to the castle is rewarded with breathtaking views of Borsh, its long sandy beach, and the surrounding mountains. The site is open year-round and offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Although large parts of the castle have been destroyed, the entrance gate and large parts of the fortification walls remain, as well as a mosque next to the entrance.
