Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Vlorë, take a bus to Hekal. Buses depart regularly from Vlorë's main bus station. The bus fare is approximately 150 ALL. From Hekal, it's a 20-minute (1.5 km) walk to the park entrance. Follow the main road and signs to Byllis.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are available from Vlorë to Byllis Archaeological Park. The ride takes about 30 minutes and typically costs between 3,000 to 4,000 ALL. Alternatively, from Hekal, a local taxi to the entrance costs around 300 ALL.

  • Car

    From Vlorë, head southeast on SH8 towards Hekal. Follow signs for Byllis Archaeological Park. Free parking is available at the site. Note that there is a new road to get to Byllis from the Levan-Tepelena highway.

Byllis Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the impressive remains of an ancient city that thrived for centuries. Founded in the 4th century BC, Byllis was the chief city of the Illyrian Bylliones tribe and later flourished under Roman and Byzantine rule. The city's strategic location on a high plateau provided commanding views of the surrounding Vjosa River valley and the Adriatic Sea. Covering 30 hectares, the park showcases remnants of Byllis's rich history, including the 2.2 km long city walls, six gateways, and a partially restored theater that once seated 7,500 spectators. Explore the foundations of basilicas adorned with intricate mosaics, a colonnaded stoa, a stadium, and water cisterns. Although sacked in 586 AD and subsequently abandoned, Byllis remains a captivating site where visitors can wander through history and admire the panoramic views. The site is open year-round, with slightly reduced hours during the winter months. The park provides information tables in English to enrich the experience.
