Discover more about The Clock Tower Of Tirana

Rising from Skanderbeg Square, the Kulla e Sahatit (Clock Tower) is more than just a timepiece; it's a symbol of Tirana's transformation. Constructed in 1822 by Et'hem Bey, who also built the adjacent Et'hem Bey Mosque, the tower represented progress and civic pride during the Ottoman period. The tower's architecture blends Ottoman and local styles. Its square stone base, built with local limestone, supports a cylindrical tower topped with a dome-shaped roof and a viewing balcony. The tower stands approximately 35 meters (115 feet) tall and was once the tallest building in the city. Inside, a spiral staircase with 90 narrow steps leads to the top. Over the years, the clock tower has undergone several changes. The original clock mechanism was imported from Venice, with a bell from Germany added in the 19th century. In 1928, a German-made clock replaced the original. Damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt, and a modern clock system was installed in 1970. Today, the Kulla e Sahatit is one of the few surviving examples of Ottoman civic architecture in Tirana, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and panoramic views of the evolving city.
