Et'hem Bey Mosque: A Tirana Treasure

The Et'hem Bey Mosque, or Xhamia e Et'hem Beut, is a captivating historical and cultural landmark in the heart of Tirana. Situated on the edge of Skanderbeg Square, the mosque is one of the oldest structures in the city, representing a blend of Islamic, Ottoman, and Albanian architectural styles.Construction began in the late 18th century (1791 or 1794) by Molla Bey and was completed in 1819 or 1821 by his son, Haxhi Et'hem Bey. The mosque distinguishes itself with its striking frescoes, depicting trees, waterfalls, and bridges – motifs rarely seen in Islamic art. These paintings adorn both the exterior and interior of the portico, offering a unique artistic experience. The mosque's architecture includes a prayer hall, a portico surrounding its north side, and a minaret. The prayer hall features a square plan covered by a dome, while the portico showcases graceful arches and detailed craftsmanship.Throughout Albania's tumultuous history, the Et'hem Bey Mosque has stood as a symbol of resilience. During the communist regime, when religious practices were suppressed, the mosque was closed but not destroyed. In a powerful act of defiance in January 1991, thousands of people gathered at the mosque to perform prayers without state permission, marking a pivotal moment in the country's return to religious freedom. Today, the Et'hem Bey Mosque is both a functioning house of worship and a popular tourist attraction.
