Getting There

    From the center of Himarë, follow the main road (SH8) north for approximately 2.5 kilometers. The walk is uphill and can be steep in sections, taking around 45 minutes to an hour. Look for signs directing you to Himara Castle or Himara Old Town. The entrance to the castle is near the Greek-Orthodox Church Of All Saints. Be prepared for a strenuous walk, especially during the hotter months.

    Local buses run along the SH8 highway between Himarë and nearby towns. Inquire about buses heading towards Himara Castle or Himara Old Town. The bus will drop you off on the main road (SH8) near the foot of the castle. From there, it's a short, but steep, walk uphill to the entrance. Located approximately 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himara, the castle's origins trace back 3,500 years to the time of the Chaonians. Originally fortified in the 8th century BC, the castle has seen the rise and fall of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman powers. Mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, the castle has served as a vital stronghold, witnessing countless battles and occupations. The castle became the center of the Bishopric of Himara in the 8th century. Inhabited until the 16th century, it was slowly abandoned as the population moved towards the coast.
