Walking
From the center of Himarë, follow the main road (SH8) north for approximately 2.5 kilometers. The walk is uphill and can be steep in sections, taking around 45 minutes to an hour. Look for signs directing you to Himara Castle or Himara Old Town. The entrance to the castle is near the Greek-Orthodox Church Of All Saints. Be prepared for a strenuous walk, especially during the hotter months.

The bus will drop you off on the main road (SH8) near the foot of the castle. From there, it's a short, but steep, walk uphill to the entrance. The castle has been a strategic point for various rulers and empires throughout the centuries.Originally fortified in the 8th century BC, the castle has seen the rise and fall of Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman powers. Mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD, the castle has served as a vital stronghold, witnessing countless battles and occupations. The castle became the center of the Bishopric of Himara in the 8th century. Inhabited until the 16th century, it was slowly abandoned as the population moved towards the coast.Today, Himara Castle offers visitors a unique blend of historical intrigue and breathtaking views. Wander through the network of small cobbled streets, explore the ruins of old houses, and discover beautifully preserved churches like the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of Saint Mary Kasopitra.
