Public Transport

To reach Petrela Castle via public transportation, take a bus from Tirana to the town of Petrelë. Buses frequently depart from the Southeast Bus Station in Tirana towards Elbasan and can drop you off in Petrela. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. The bus fare is around 100 ALL. Once you arrive in Petrelë, walk towards Rruga Petreles. The walk to the castle is uphill, about 1 km and may take 20-30 minutes. Be prepared for a small hike. Check the bus schedule for the return trip.

Taxi

For a more convenient option, take a taxi from Tirana directly to Petrela Castle. The drive will take approximately 20-25 minutes. The taxi fare may vary, so it is advisable to negotiate a price beforehand or ensure the meter is running. A taxi from Tirana to Petrela Castle will cost around 3000 to 4000 ALL.

Car

If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Tirana and head south on the SH2 road. Continue on the SH2 for approximately 15 kilometers until you reach the town of Petrelë. Once in Petrelë, look for Rruga Petreles, where you will find the entrance to Petrela Castle. Parking is available nearby, but it may require a small fee depending on the time of your visit.

Located in the village of Petrelë, a short drive from Tirana, Petrela Castle stands as a prominent symbol of Albania's rich heritage. The castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, though the structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. Strategically positioned 329 meters (1,079 ft) above sea level, Petrela Castle was an integral part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles.During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. The castle has a triangular shape, featuring two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. A restaurant located within the castle offers traditional Albanian cuisine, providing a unique dining experience with a historical backdrop. It's a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and those seeking scenic beauty.Petrela village, where the castle is located, is known for its natural beauty and Mediterranean climate.
