The Blue Eye: Albania's Mystical Spring

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a captivating natural spring located approximately 22 kilometers east of Saranda, Albania. Situated on the road between Saranda and Gjirokastra, this natural wonder is a must-see for visitors to southern Albania. The Blue Eye is one of Albania's most potent springs, with an average discharge of 6,000 liters per second. At high water, this discharge can reach an astounding 18,400 liters per second. Divers have explored the spring to depths of over 50 meters, but the actual depth remains unknown due to the strong water pressure.The spring is the source of the Bistrice River, which eventually flows into the Ionian Sea. The water is remarkably clear, allowing visitors to observe the underwater environment, including plants, stones, and fish. The water temperature remains a consistent 10 degrees Celsius year-round, making it quite chilly. The surrounding area is a protected natural monument, showcasing the beauty of the Albanian forest with oak and sycamore trees. Hiking trails and camping are permitted in the area, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.While swimming was once a popular activity, it is now officially prohibited to preserve the delicate ecosystem. However, some visitors still brave the cold waters for a quick dip. The Blue Eye is open from 7 AM to 7 PM, and the entrance fee is 50 lek per person. A visit to the Blue Eye typically requires about 1-2 hours, allowing time to walk from the parking area, admire the spring, and perhaps enjoy a coffee at the nearby cafe. To avoid crowds, especially during the peak summer months, it's best to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
