Discover more about Sacred Heart Cathedral

The Sacred Heart Cathedral, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district of Algiers, is a remarkable Roman Catholic church that replaced the Cathedral of Saint Philip after it was reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. Consecrated in 1963, the cathedral embodies modernist architectural principles with inspiration from the Gospel of John. Commissioned by Bishop Leynaud in 1944, construction began after some of the most severe battles of World War II had ceased. His wish was to offer vows of gratitude to God for the protection of Algeria and keeping the country away from the dangers of the war. The cathedral was designed by architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur, along with engineer René Sarger, and is noted for its central tower. The structure spans 52 meters in length and 35 meters in width. Inside, a peaceful atmosphere is enhanced by unique features. A small organ, donated by the parish of Boufarik, greets visitors at the nave entrance, opposite a historic mosaic dating back to 324 CE, originating from the Roman basilica of Castellum Tingitanum (present-day Chlef). The altar, carved from Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints. The cathedral showcases intricate stained-glass windows that bathe the interior in vibrant light. The surrounding gardens provide a tranquil escape.
