Getting There

  • Public Transport

    The most common way to reach Vall de Núria is by train to Ribes de Freser, followed by the rack railway. From Barcelona, take the R3 Rodalies train to Ribes de Freser. From Ribes de Freser, transfer to the Vall de Núria rack railway. A combined train + rack railway ticket (TReNatura) is available from any Rodalies ticket machine or online. The rack railway journey takes approximately 40 minutes. In 2025, the adult rack railway ticket from Ribes de Freser costs €33.00. Alternatively, you can take a train to Ribes-Enllaç. From there, you can take the rack railway to the resort. An urban ticket for the train from Ribes to Queralbs costs €6 for adults.

    Drive to one of the rack railway stations in Ribes de Freser or Queralbs. Free parking is available at Ribes-Enllaç, Ribes-Vila and Queralbs stations. From there, take the rack railway to Vall de Núria. Note that you cannot drive directly to Vall de Núria. You can park motorhomes in the car park at Queralbs station, but overnight stays are not allowed.

Vall de Núria, a picturesque valley in the heart of the Pyrenees, offers a unique escape into nature and history. Located in the municipality of Queralbs, Girona, this mountain resort stands at an altitude of 2,000 meters, surrounded by peaks reaching almost 3,000 meters. What sets Vall de Núria apart is its inaccessibility by car; the only way to reach this tranquil haven is via a rack railway or by foot, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere away from the bustling crowds. The valley's history is intertwined with the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Núria, a site of pilgrimage for over 800 years. Legend has it that Saint Giles arrived in the valley around 700 AD and hid an image of the Virgin Mary in a cave. In the 11th century, a pilgrim rediscovered the image, leading to the construction of a chapel and the establishment of Núria as a place of worship. The current church and hotel were built in the early 20th century. In 1931, the valley was also the site where the first Catalan Statute of Autonomy was drafted. Today, Vall de Núria offers a wide range of activities for visitors of all ages. In winter, it transforms into a ski resort with 11 pistes, snowshoeing, and sledding. During the warmer months, hiking, horse riding, canoeing on the lake, and exploring the Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser Natural Park are popular choices.
