Discover more about Liberia Fort

Fort Libéria, a commanding sentinel overlooking Villefranche-de-Conflent, stands as a testament to 17th-century military engineering. Constructed by Louis XIV's military engineer, Vauban, starting in 1681, the fort was strategically built to defend the newly acquired territory of Roussillon after the Treaty of the Pyrenees. Later, between 1850 and 1856, Napoleon III reinforced the fort, adding to its already impressive defenses. Positioned on a hill 160 meters above Villefranche-de-Conflent, at the confluence of the Têt, Rotjà, and Cady rivers, the fort offers stunning views of the valley. Its design, featuring two hexagons nested within each other and angular slopes, was adapted to the terrain to resist artillery fire. Visitors can explore the ramparts, discover historical reconstructions within 12 rooms, and see a chapel, bread oven, and gunboats. One of the most unique features of Fort Libéria is its connection to Villefranche-de-Conflent via a 765-step underground staircase. For the less adventurous, a footpath offers a 30-minute walk, while a 4x4 vehicle can also transport visitors to the fort. The fort also served as a prison; in 1682, two women accused in the Affair of the Poisons were imprisoned here by order of Louis XIV. Fort Libéria is a classified monument historique and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
