Discover more about Calidea i la Dama del Gel

Located in the roundabout near the Pont del Pla tunnel in Les Escaldes, Andorra, Calidea i la Dama del Gel is a striking sculptural complex that captures the essence of local mythology and artistry. The sculpture consists of two distinct figures: 'Calidea,' crafted by Àngel Calvente, draws inspiration from legends and myths surrounding water. 'La Dama del Gel' (The Ice Lady), created by Philip Lavaill, represents an equestrian figure, a symbiosis of a horse and a sylph. The two figures are made entirely of stainless steel. Water plays a crucial role in the sculpture's appeal. Water springs forth from Calidea and cascades onto the Dama del Gel, creating a visual connection between the two figures. During the winter months, this water freezes, encasing the sculpture in ice and giving it a unique, ephemeral quality that enhances its symbolic representation of the union between water and ice. The sculpture was created in 2001, sponsored by Astral, a company located in Polinyà. It measures 11 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height, weighting one ton. The sculpture represents a popular legend from Bescaran, recovered by Phillip Lavaill. Calidea i la Dama del Gel is more than just a visual attraction; it's a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of Les Escaldes and the surrounding region. Its easily accessible location makes it a must-see for visitors exploring the town.
