Discover more about Església de Sant Serni | Canillo

Església de Sant Serni de Canillo is a prominent landmark in the charming town of Canillo, Andorra. Originally built on the site of a 12th-century Romanesque church, the current structure largely reflects 17th and 18th-century Baroque architectural styles. Master builders Pere Moles and Francesc Porta from Seu d'Urgell led the construction between 1758 and 1768. The church features a rectangular floor plan with a quadrangular apse and a gable roof. The nave is adorned with a wooden ceiling, and the interior houses a baroque wooden choir and furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The main altar is dedicated to Saint Saturnin, constructed in the late 17th century. Several altarpieces grace the chapels, including a 17th-century altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary, an 18th-century altarpiece dedicated to the Holy Christ, and a 19th-century altarpiece honoring Saint Anthony. One of the church's most notable features is its bell tower, the tallest in Andorra, standing at 28.5 meters. Semi-detached and located on the south side of the church, the bell tower houses a 120-kilo bell created in 1833, which was recently restored in 2024. Excavations during renovations in 2009 unearthed tombs dating from the 7th to 18th centuries, adding to the historical significance of the site. Today, Església de Sant Serni is a cultural heritage property, attracting visitors with its serene atmosphere and stunning views of the surrounding Pyrenees. It offers a unique opportunity to connect with the spiritual and cultural essence of Canillo.
