Discover more about Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell

The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, located in the parish of Canillo, is Andorra's most important religious site and a symbol of national identity. The basilica is dedicated to the Virgin of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra, whose image is venerated within its walls. The sanctuary's history is rooted in a 12th-century legend. According to the tale, a shepherd discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary in a winter-blooming rose bush. Attempts to move the statue to nearby churches failed as it repeatedly returned to the rose bush, leading to the construction of a chapel on that very spot. The original Romanesque chapel was renovated in the 17th century, but a fire on September 8, 1972, tragically destroyed the sanctuary, including the Romanesque carving of the Virgin. This event deeply affected the Andorran people and sparked a desire for rebirth and renewal. The renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill was commissioned to design the new sanctuary, which was completed in 1976. Bofill's design blends modern and medieval styles, incorporating elements of Romanesque and Gothic traditions while integrating the structure into the Pyrenean landscape. The basilica features a unique open cloister with uncovered archways, a central fountain, and a combination of slate and white stone, symbolizing the Andorran tradition and winter snow. The interior is austere, with a stained-glass window and the altar of the Virgin Mary statue as the main features. In addition to its spiritual significance, the Sanctuary of Meritxell is an artistic and cultural landmark. The former sanctuary has been transformed into an exhibition hall called Meritxell Memoria, showcasing the history and cult of Meritxell. The basilica also houses statues of other Andorran saints, created by sculptor Sergi Mas. The Sanctuary of Meritxell was granted the title of minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014 and is part of the Marian Route, connecting it to other important sanctuaries in France and Spain.
