Discover more about Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell

The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell is more than just a church; it's a testament to Andorra's enduring faith and cultural heritage. The original Romanesque chapel, which housed a 12th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, tragically burned down in 1972, destroying the statue and much of the sanctuary. In 1976, a new basilica, designed by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, was built to replace the original. Bofill's design blends Romanesque imagery with modern architectural techniques, incorporating slate and white stone to symbolize the surrounding mountains and snow. The basilica's open cloister, with its uncovered arches and central fountain, evokes elements of Islamic art, while the interior remains remarkably austere, drawing attention to the stained glass windows and the replica of the Virgin Mary statue. Legend says that villagers discovered the original statue of the Virgin Mary under a wild rose. They moved the statue to churches in other towns, but the statue kept returning to Meritxell. Taking the hint, the villagers built her a church in Meritxell, where she remained for 800 years. Today, the Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell stands as a beacon of faith and a cultural landmark. In addition to the replica of the Virgin, the basilica houses seven sculptures by Sergi Mas, each representing the patron saint of Andorra's parishes. Visitors can explore the basilica's architecture, learn about the history of Meritxell, and experience the serene atmosphere of this sacred site. The basilica was granted the title of minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014 and is part of the Marian Route, connecting it to other significant sanctuaries in Spain and France.
