Discover more about Fortress of São Miguel

Perched atop a strategic hill in Luanda, the Fortress of São Miguel is a powerful reminder of Angola's colonial past. Built in 1576 by Paulo Dias de Novais, the fortress was the first defensive structure erected in Luanda. Initially designed to protect the city from foreign invaders, it has witnessed centuries of Angolan history. For many years, the fortress functioned as a self-contained town, its thick walls and imposing cannons a deterrent to potential attackers. In 1627, it became the administrative center of the Portuguese colony, further solidifying its importance. The fortress also played a dark role in the transatlantic slave trade, serving as a major site for exporting enslaved people to Brazil. In the 17th century, the fortress briefly fell under Dutch control and was renamed Fort Aardenburgh before being reclaimed by the Portuguese. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it underwent several renovations and expansions. In 1938, it was classified as a national monument. Today, the Fortress of São Miguel is home to the Museum of the Armed Forces, showcasing Angola's military history. Visitors can explore the fortress's courtyards, admire the imposing statues of Portuguese explorers and rulers, and examine well-preserved artifacts. The walls of the fortress are adorned with elaborate ceramic tiles depicting scenes from Angola's past. The fortress also offers incredible panoramic views of Luanda Bay.
