Discover more about Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre

Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre, located within Nelson's Dockyard National Park, provides visitors with an in-depth look at Antigua's rich history and stunning vistas. The center is situated on a hill that was once part of the estate of Archibald Dow, a Royal Navy official. In 1789, the land was acquired to construct fortifications to protect the ridgeline above the Dockyard from land attacks. The Interpretation Centre showcases Antiguan history from the first Amerindian settlers through European agricultural settlements, the island's role as a British military base, and the campaign for independence. A highlight is the multimedia presentation that traces the island's history. The museum also offers walking tours to nearby historic sites and a weekly "Rum in the Ruins" tour. The fortifications at Dow's Hill were started in 1789 by the Royal Engineers. The stone wall aesthetic was intended to impress and overwhelm any attacking force by making the fortification seem larger than it actually was. Dow's house was used by senior officers of the garrison before being converted to a residence for the Governor of the Leeward Islands. The building was destroyed in an earthquake in 1843. In 1989, the Government of Canada granted funds to build the Interpretation Centre, including the installation of the historic sound and light show at Dow's Hill. Today, visitors can explore the exhibits, enjoy the panoramic views of English Harbour, and appreciate the natural beauty of the park. The center also hosts events and can be transformed for special occasions.
