Discover more about Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre

Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre, located within Nelson's Dockyard National Park, provides an immersive journey through Antigua's rich history. The center is located on a hill that was once part of the estate of Archibald Dow, a Royal Navy official. In 1789, the land was acquired to construct fortifications to protect the ridgeline from land attacks. These fortifications included stone walls designed to appear more imposing than they actually were. Dow's house was initially used by senior officers before becoming the residence for the Governor of the Leeward Islands. However, an earthquake in 1834 destroyed the residence. In 1989, with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Interpretation Centre was established to cater to tourists. The center presents Antiguan history through multimedia presentations, from the first Amerindian settlers to European agricultural settlements, the island's role as a British military base, and the campaign for independence. Visitors can explore interactive displays, informative exhibits, and enjoy stunning views of English Harbour. The center also features a gift shop and a café-cum-bar. Today, Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre offers visitors a chance to explore Antigua's past while enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding national park. The center is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.
