Discover more about Portal de El Calafate

The Portal de El Calafate is more than just a tourist information center; it's a gateway to the majestic landscapes of Patagonia. Situated in the town of El Calafate, it acts as a hub for travelers seeking to explore the region's natural wonders. Founded in 1927, El Calafate initially served as a shelter for wool traders. However, the establishment of Perito Moreno National Park in 1937 spurred its growth into a significant tourist destination. The town's name comes from the calafate bush, known for its yellow flowers and dark blue berries, a common sight in the Patagonian landscape. The Portal offers visitors essential information about the area, including guided tours, outdoor excursions, and cultural experiences. It's a starting point for adventures like hiking, wildlife observation, and photography. The nearby Perito Moreno Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a major draw, with the Portal providing resources to navigate this icy marvel. El Calafate itself offers attractions such as the Glaciarium, a museum dedicated to the Patagonian Ice Field. The town also provides access to El Chaltén, known as the "Trekking Capital of Argentina," and other destinations within Los Glaciares National Park.
