Glaciar Los Perros: A Remote Patagonian Wonder

Glaciar Los Perros, hidden within Torres del Paine National Park, offers a pristine and less-crowded glacial experience. Situated in the heart of the Perros Valley on the northern side of the Paine massif, the glacier descends dramatically, feeding the milky blue waters of Laguna Los Perros. The glacier is a highlight for those undertaking the challenging 'O' Circuit or the full Paine Circuit. As trekkers round the northern section of the circuit, the Los Perros Glacier emerges as the first major glacier along the route, typically viewed on the third day of hiking. The name 'Los Perros' (The Dogs) is said to originate from the wild dogs that early explorers, like John Garner and Oscar Guineo, frequently encountered in the area. Like many glaciers in Patagonia, Glaciar Los Perros is in retreat, a visible reminder of climate change. Icebergs calve into the lagoon, their intense white color a sign of the compressed oxygen within the ancient ice. Reaching the glacier involves traversing diverse terrain, including dense forests and potentially challenging trails. The path from nearby Refugio Perros or the Dickson campsite can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 4-5 hours, depending on the specific route and conditions.
