- Permits are required for parking from April 1 to October 1 and must be reserved in advance at Recreation.gov.
- Bring plenty of water (at least a gallon per person), as the hike can be strenuous, especially during hot weather.
- Wear sturdy hiking shoes and be prepared for a steep descent and ascent on the trails.
- Be aware that camping and campfires are prohibited within the Fossil Springs Wilderness area during certain times of the year.
- Pack out all trash and follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the pristine environment.

Driving
From Strawberry, AZ, head west on Fossil Creek Road (FR 708). The Bob Bear Trailhead parking lot will be on the right, approximately 5 miles from Strawberry. Note that FR 708 does not connect to the Fossil Creek canyon. A permit is required to park at the Bob Bear Trailhead between April 1 and October 1, and reservations must be made in advance at Recreation.gov for $6.00 per vehicle. Gates are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during this period, with the access gate closing at 4 p.m.. From October 2 to March 31, no permit is required, and the gates are open 24 hours.

Hiking
From the Bob Bear Trailhead, follow the Bob Bear Trail (formerly Fossil Springs Trail) for approximately 4 miles downhill to reach the Fossil Springs area. The trail descends 1,500 feet into the canyon and is considered a difficult hike due to the elevation change and rocky terrain. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. The trail is well-marked, but it's recommended to download offline maps due to unreliable cell service.
