The Northern Gila County Historical Society's Rim Country Museum and Zane Grey Cabin offers a glimpse into the region's rich past. Located in Payson's Green Valley Park, the museum features exhibits on local history, including Native American culture, pioneer history, and the late 19th-century gold rush. The museum is housed in several historical buildings, including a 1907 Forest Ranger's residence that now serves as the museum store. Visitors can explore outdoor exhibits, including replicated 19th-century buildings and original foundations. A highlight is the replica of Zane Grey's cabin, dedicated to the famous author who frequently vacationed in the area and set many of his Western novels in Arizona. The original cabin was destroyed in the Dude Fire in 1990. Inside the replica, you'll find many of his personal items such as chaps, saddles, guns, books and posters. The Northern Gila County Historical Society aims to preserve the history and culture of the Payson community. It collects and preserves photographs, historical artifacts, and personal stories for exhibition. The museum hosts community events, such as the Museum Speaker Series, to enhance public understanding of local history. The gift shop offers unique local souvenirs, including books on Rim Country history and branded apparel. The museum is open Thursdays from 1 pm to 4 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm.
