Discover more about Historic Ellis-Shackelford House

The Ellis-Shackelford House stands as a testament to Phoenix's architectural and cultural heritage. Constructed in 1917 for Dr. William C. Ellis, a prominent physician, the house is a unique blend of Prairie and Craftsman styles. Designed by local architect R.A. Gray, it features wire-cut bricks from Colorado, mahogany wood trim imported from the Philippines, and hand-painted globe-style chandeliers. Located on what was once known as "Millionaires' Row" on North Central Avenue, the Ellis-Shackelford House is the only unaltered survivor of the grand mansions that once lined the street. The area earned its nickname during the 1910s through the 1930s when many similar mansions were constructed. The house has three stories, a basement, and unique features such as a porte-cochere designed for the Model-Ts and carriages of the time, as well as an original 1917 solar water heater and a central vacuum system. Over the years, the Ellis-Shackelford House has served various purposes. Dr. Ellis's daughter and her husband, J. Gordon Shackelford, lived there until 1964. It later became a boys' home and then housed the Arizona Historical Society offices and museum. Today, the City of Phoenix owns the building, and it is home to Arizona Humanities. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and the Phoenix Historic Property Register in 1986.
