To reach the Gateway Trailhead at McDowell Sonoran Preserve from downtown Phoenix, start by heading to the nearest Valley Metro bus stop. Take Bus Route 72 heading north towards the Scottsdale area. Stay on the bus for approximately 45 minutes, and disembark at the stop at E Shea Blvd & N 100th St. From there, transfer to Bus Route 186 towards Scottsdale. Ride for about 20 minutes until you reach the stop at N Thompson Peak Pkwy & E Via Linda. The Gateway Trailhead will be a short walk from the bus stop, approximately 0.5 miles to the north along N Thompson Peak Pkwy.
