Discover more about Tufa Terrace Trail

The Tufa Terrace Trail is a captivating 0.3-mile paved walkway in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, renowned for its unique geothermal features. The trail meanders through a landscape adorned with tufa formations – porous rocks created over millennia by calcium carbonate deposits from the park's hot springs. As you stroll along the trail, you'll encounter the Hot Water Cascade, where steaming thermal waters flow down the hillside, creating a visually stunning display. The water, which originates deep within Hot Springs Mountain, is naturally heated and rich in minerals. Before the bathhouses diverted the flow, these springs cascaded down the slope, forming extensive mineral terraces. While landscaping has obscured some of the original formations, you can still observe surviving tufa deposits near the trail's end and at the Open Springs behind Bathhouse Row. The Tufa Terrace Trail provides an accessible way to experience the park's unique geology and learn about the region's thermal waters. The trail connects to the Grand Promenade, a scenic brick walkway, and Arlington Lawn, offering opportunities for extended exploration of Hot Springs National Park.
