Discover more about Hot Springs National Park

Hot Springs National Park, located in central Arkansas, is a unique blend of natural hot springs and urban history. Unlike many national parks, Hot Springs is integrated into the city of Hot Springs, making it easily accessible and offering a different kind of park experience. For thousands of years, Native American tribes visited the area, drawn to the healing properties of the thermal waters. In 1541, Hernando de Soto became the first European to document the springs. The area officially became U.S. territory in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Recognizing the springs' potential, the U.S. Congress established the Hot Springs Reservation in 1832, marking the first time land was set aside by the federal government for recreation. This reservation later became a national park in 1921. The park's main attraction is Bathhouse Row, a collection of eight historic bathhouses showcasing early 20th-century architecture. While most bathhouses have been repurposed, the Buckstaff and Quapaw continue to offer traditional bathing experiences. Visitors can also enjoy scenic drives, hiking trails, and free jug fountains dispensing the park's thermal spring water. The Fordyce Bathhouse serves as the park's visitor center, offering tours and information. Today, Hot Springs National Park is a destination for those seeking relaxation, recreation, and a glimpse into the past.
