Getting There

  • Driving

    From Perryville, AR, head south on AR Hwy 9 for 13.6 miles. Turn right (west) onto Forest Service Road 132 and continue for 8.3 miles. Turn right (north) onto Forest Road 94 and drive 3 miles to reach Flatside Pinnacle, a common access point. Note that FSR 132 is also the Winona Auto Tour route. There are no fees to access the Flatside Wilderness.

Flatside Wilderness, nestled in the eastern reaches of the Ouachita Mountains, is a testament to the untamed beauty of Arkansas. Designated in 1984 and expanded in 2019, this 9,507-acre wilderness area beckons outdoor enthusiasts with its rugged terrain, panoramic views, and a sense of profound solitude. The landscape is dominated by White Oak Mountain (the highest point in the Wilderness at 1,650 feet) and Forked Mountain. From the overlooks, a seemingly endless canopy of pines and hardwoods stretches out below. Several creeks meander through the area, adding to the picturesque scenery. The Flatside Wilderness offers a variety of activities, including hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding. The Ouachita National Recreation Trail traverses the wilderness for approximately 10 miles, providing access to the interior. Off-trail hikers can discover some of the most remote areas of Arkansas. Keep an eye out for black bears, bobcats, and white-tailed deer. Visitors should be aware that the Flatside Wilderness has no developed recreation facilities. There are few, if any, signs to guide you. Mountain bikes, hang gliders, and motorized vehicles are prohibited, ensuring a pristine and tranquil experience.
