Discover more about Ace of Clubs House

Step back in time at the Ace of Clubs House, a distinctive landmark in Texarkana, Texas. Built in 1885, this Italianate Victorian home is designed in the shape of a club from a deck of playing cards, making it one of the most unique houses in the country. Legend says that Confederate veteran James H. Draughon built the house with winnings from a poker game where he won $10,000 with an ace of clubs. The house features three octagonal wings and a rectangular wing, all connected to a central octagonal stair hall. The unusual design results in a 22-sided structure, complete with a 20-foot tower and a spiral staircase. The interior is decorated to represent different periods in the home's history, from 1880 to 1940, offering visitors a glimpse into Texarkana high society. Three families called the Ace of Clubs House home before it was donated to the Texarkana Museum System in 1985. The last resident, Olivia Smith Moore, lived in the house until her death and bequeathed it to the museum. Today, the house serves as a museum, hosting tours, events, and even weddings.
