Goshavank Monastery: A Medieval Armenian Marvel

Goshavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of Gosh," is a remarkable testament to Armenia's rich medieval history and culture. Located in the village of Gosh, in the Tavush Province, the monastery dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It was erected on the site of an older monastery, Nor Getik, which was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1188. The reconstruction was led by Mkhitar Gosh, a prominent Armenian scholar, statesman, and author of fables and the first Armenian criminal code. In his honor, the rebuilt monastery was named Goshavank. Gosh also founded a school at the monastery, which became a significant center for education, science, and culture in medieval Armenia. Kirakos Gandzaketsi, a notable Armenian scientist and historian, was among its alumni. The monastery complex comprises several interconnected structures, showcasing traditional Armenian architectural styles. Key features include the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin), built between 1191 and 1196. The Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, built in 1237 and finished in 1241, stands out with its lavish decorations. The complex also includes chapels, a bell tower, a book depository, and khachkars. Goshavank is renowned for its exceptional khachkars, particularly the one carved by Pavgos in 1291, considered among the finest examples of Armenian cross-stone art. Today, Goshavank Monastery is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance, architectural beauty, and serene setting. Although no longer a functioning religious complex, it offers a glimpse into Armenia's medieval past and the legacy of Mkhitar Gosh.
