Discover more about Bubali Bird Sanctuary

The Bubali Bird Sanctuary, located in Noord, Aruba, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. This protected area, spanning approximately 20 hectares, was established in 1980 to offer a safe environment for a diverse range of migratory birds. Originally created as a wastewater treatment facility, the sanctuary has evolved into a lush wetland that attracts over 80 species of birds. The sanctuary's interconnected man-made ponds, fed by a nearby water treatment facility, create an oasis of lush vegetation that provides a resting and breeding area for migratory birds. Bird species commonly seen here include herons, egrets, gulls, skimmers, coots, and ducks. Lucky visitors might also spot black-necked stilts, Bahamian pintails, lapwings, troupials, Caribbean parakeets, moorhens, and green herons. The desert scrub vegetation along the seaward side provides habitat for nesting white-tailed nightjars, yellow warblers, burrowing owls, ruby-topaz hummingbirds, eared and common ground doves, and bananaquits. The observation tower on the north side of the sanctuary offers a bird's-eye view of the area, allowing visitors to observe the birds in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is conveniently located within walking distance of the Palm Beach resorts and is easily identifiable by the nearby Old Dutch Windmill. While the sanctuary experienced a fire in 2018 that destroyed 24% of its area, it has since recovered and continues to be an important bird area. Visitors can access the sanctuary by car, bus, or taxi. There are no specific opening hours, but it is recommended to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the birds are most active. Admission is free, making it an accessible and enriching experience for all.
