Discover more about Queensland Art Gallery

The Queensland Art Gallery (QAG), an integral part of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), has been a cornerstone of Brisbane's cultural landscape since its establishment in 1895. Originally known as the Queensland National Art Gallery, it occupied several temporary locations before finding its permanent home in the architecturally acclaimed South Bank building in 1982. Designed by Robin Gibson, the building itself is considered a landmark, setting a benchmark for future developments in the area. QAG boasts a collection of over 17,000 artworks from Australia and around the world, encompassing a wide range of mediums. The gallery is particularly renowned for its collection of contemporary Asian and Pacific art. A major priority for QAG is collecting works by Australian artists, with the first acquisitions being gifts from Brisbane artists at the turn of the century. The collection also includes major works by Edwardian expatriate artists. Visitors can explore a diverse range of exhibitions and displays, from historical pieces to modern and contemporary works. QAG also hosts the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, a major event on the international arts calendar. In addition to its exhibitions, QAG offers a variety of programs and events, including guided tours, workshops, and film screenings. The Children's Art Centre at the nearby GOMA provides engaging and interactive experiences for younger visitors.
