Discover more about National Arboretum Canberra

The National Arboretum Canberra is more than just a collection of trees; it's a testament to resilience and a celebration of the natural world. Established after devastating bushfires in 2001 and 2003, which destroyed a commercial pine plantation and part of a Himalayan cedar forest, the Arboretum was born from the ashes as a symbol of healing and renewal. Officially opened in February 2013, the Arboretum fulfills Walter Burley Griffin's original vision for Canberra to include an arboretum. The Arboretum features 94 forests and 100 gardens, showcasing a diverse range of trees from around the globe. Visitors can explore established forests of Himalayan cedar and cork oak, planted under the guidance of early town planners. A poignant forest of Turkish Pine commemorates Australian service personnel, while ceremonial Aleppo Pines, propagated from the Lone Pine at the Australian War Memorial, stand on Dairy Farmers Hill. The Village Centre, an architecturally stunning timber structure, houses a cafe, restaurant, gift shop, and interpretive exhibition. The National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia, a world-class display of miniature trees, is also located here. Children can explore the nature-themed Pod Playground, featuring giant acorn cubbies and banksia pods. With over 20 kilometers of multi-purpose tracks, the Arboretum invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature, discover stunning views, and learn about the importance of trees in our world. Entry to the National Arboretum Canberra is free.
