Discover more about Black Mountain Nature Reserve

Black Mountain Nature Reserve, a dominant feature of Canberra's landscape, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Rising 812 meters above sea level, the mountain is capped by the 195-meter Telstra Tower, a landmark visible from across the city. The reserve protects a diverse ecosystem, with sandstone geology supporting over 660 plant species, including 60 orchid varieties and 40 rare plant species. It's a haven for wildlife, including 100 bird species and countless insects. Keep an eye out for threatened species like the Scarlet Robin and Gang-gang Cockatoo. Explore the reserve's network of walking trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging climbs. The Forest Loop Walk encircles the summit, while the Summit Walk offers a direct ascent from the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The Woodland Walk provides a shorter, less strenuous option. Each trail offers unique perspectives and opportunities to connect with nature. Black Mountain's history stretches back millions of years, with its Early Silurian rocks dating back 435 to 430 million years. The area also holds cultural significance, as local Aboriginals historically used fire to manage the land. In more recent times, the construction of Telstra Tower sparked Canberra's first major environmental protest.
