Discover more about Lal Lal Falls Lookout

Lal Lal Falls Lookout provides visitors with a breathtaking panorama of Lal Lal Falls, where water cascades over basalt columns into a deep ravine. The name 'Lal Lal' is derived from the Aboriginal term for 'dashing of waters,' reflecting the falls' significance to the local Wathaurung people. The falls are believed to be the earthly home of Bunjil, the All Father or Creator spirit to most Victorian Aboriginal tribes, adding a layer of cultural importance to the site. The Lal Lal Falls Reserve has been a popular destination for over 140 years, officially becoming a public park in 1865. In the past, visitors could walk down to the base of the falls, but this access is now prohibited due to safety concerns. Instead, a viewing platform provides a secure vantage point, offering sweeping views of the gorge and the falls. For an alternative perspective, the Von Guerard View Track leads to a spot where the Austrian painter Eugene von Guerard sketched the falls in 1858. The surrounding area is steeped in history. The nearby Lal Lal Iron Mine and Blast Furnace stand as remnants of Victoria's only attempt at smelting iron ore. The town of Lal Lal also prospered as a mining community, with a railway line constructed to transport both minerals and visitors to the popular New Year's Day Picnic Race Meeting. Today, visitors can explore the historic railway station and imagine the bustling crowds of the past. The reserve offers various facilities for a comfortable visit, including a large grassy area, picnic tables, toilets, and an undercover shelter with BBQs. Walking tracks cater to different fitness levels, with the Lal Lal Falls Track providing a short circular walk and the Moorabool Falls Track offering a longer 5.6km return journey.
