Discover more about Tropic of Capricorn

The Tropic of Capricorn is one of Earth's major circles of latitude, lying approximately 23.5 degrees south of the Equator. This line marks the most southerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon, a phenomenon that occurs during the December solstice. While it's just an imaginary line, the Tropic of Capricorn holds geographical significance, influencing climate and marking a transition between tropical and temperate zones. The Tropic of Capricorn marker, a Bicentennial community project, is located along the Stuart Highway, about 30 kilometers north of Alice Springs. The marker itself features a stylized globe atop a slanted pole, with carvings of Capricorn goats on its base. Visitors can stop for a photo opportunity and contemplate the vastness of the Australian Outback. The surrounding Burt Plain offers a stark yet beautiful desert scenery, characterized by open skies and unique flora and fauna. While the location provides a unique opportunity to stand at this significant latitude, facilities are basic. A rest area with a picnic area, barbecue, and car park are available.
