Discover more about Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, a cornerstone of Gold Coast tourism, offers an immersive experience into Australia's unique wildlife and indigenous heritage. Established in 1947 by Alex Griffiths as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, it began as a way to divert lorikeets from his flower crops. Today, the 27-hectare sanctuary is home to over 900 animals, showcasing a diverse range of native species in natural bushland and rainforest settings. The sanctuary is divided into several key areas, including the original sanctuary site, reserve lands along Flat Rock Creek, and the Western Reserve. Visitors can explore various exhibits such as the Lost Valley, a 5-acre forest featuring exotic species like lemurs and red pandas. A miniature railway, operating since 1964, provides a charming way to traverse the park. Don't miss the daily lorikeet feeding, a world-renowned spectacle where visitors can hand-feed flocks of colorful rainbow lorikeets. Other highlights include free-flight bird shows, koala encounters, and Aboriginal dance performances. Beyond its attractions, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is deeply committed to conservation. The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, established in 1989, treats over 11,000 sick, injured, and orphaned animals each year. The sanctuary actively participates in breeding programs for endangered species and collaborates with universities on research projects. Currumbin's conservation efforts extend to various projects, including koala chlamydia vaccine research and programs for the Kroombit Tinkerfrog and Eastern Bristlebird. The sanctuary's dedication to wildlife preservation and education makes it a vital institution for safeguarding Australia's biodiversity.
