Discover more about J Ward Museum

J Ward Museum in Ararat, Victoria, offers a unique and haunting glimpse into the past. Originally built in 1859 as the Ararat County Gaol during the gold rush era, it housed dangerous criminals in austere conditions. In the 1880s, it transitioned into a ward for the criminally insane, becoming the only institution in Victoria entirely devoted to their care for 102 years. The ward was closed in 1991. Today, J Ward operates as a museum complex, preserving the stories of those who lived and died within its walls. Knowledgeable guides lead visitors through the West Wing, shower block, main cell block, gallows, and exercise yard, sharing tales of murderers, escapes, suicides, and the challenges of mental health treatment in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can see the gallows where prisoners were hanged and learn about notorious inmates like Garry Webb and Bill Wallace. The museum also displays artifacts from the prison and asylum eras, including a mortuary table, restraint devices, and patient artwork.
