Car
If you're starting from the town of Bright, head south on the Great Alpine Road (B500) towards Mount Hotham. Follow the road for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the Mount Hotham ski resort area. Continue past the resort and look for the turn-off to Blue Rag Range Track (approximately 5 kilometers past Mount Hotham). Turn onto Blue Rag Range Track, which is a dirt road. The road can be rough and is recommended for high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Follow Blue Rag Range Track for about 10 kilometers, and keep an eye out for the signs directing you to the trig point. The last section may require some off-road driving, so be cautious. Parking is available near the trig point.
Public Transportation + 4WD Hire
Take a coach service from Melbourne or Canberra to Bright. From Bright, you'll need to hire a 4WD vehicle, as public transport does not reach Blue Rag Range Trig Point directly. Head south on the Great Alpine Road (B500) towards Mount Hotham, then follow the previous car guidance from Bright. Be sure to check with local hire companies for availability of 4WDs, and confirm any rental costs. Expect to pay around AUD 150-300 per day for a 4WD rental, depending on the provider.
Walking (after driving)
Once you reach the parking area by Blue Rag Range Track, prepare for a short hike to the trig point. The hike is approximately 1.5 kilometers one way and offers stunning panoramic views. The trail is well marked, but be aware that it can be steep in sections. Ensure you wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the hike can be challenging. This part of the journey is best undertaken during daylight hours for safety.
