To reach Wonnangatta Station by car, start from the town of Bright, which is a popular starting point in the High Country. From Bright, take the Great Alpine Road (B500) towards Omeo. Continue on this road for approximately 40 kilometers until you reach the junction with the Omeo Highway (B400). Turn left onto the Omeo Highway and drive for about 25 kilometers. Look for the signs indicating Wonnangatta Road (also known as Wonnangatta Valley Road) and turn onto this road. The road can be challenging and is best suited for 4WD vehicles, so ensure your vehicle is appropriate for these conditions. Follow Wonnangatta Road for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach Wonnangatta Station. Be aware that this road may require a vehicle with high clearance due to potential rough patches. Note that there are no fuel stations along this route, so make sure to fill up your tank before starting your journey.
Public Transportation + Car
If you are relying on public transportation, your best option is to take a bus from Melbourne to Bright, which is serviced by a few bus companies. Once you arrive in Bright, you will need to arrange for a rental car or a 4WD vehicle since Wonnangatta Station is not accessible via public transport. From Bright, follow the car directions provided above. Rental car services are available in Bright, but it is advisable to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Hiking
For the adventurous, reaching Wonnangatta Station can also be done by hiking, starting from the nearest trailhead. Note that this requires a good level of fitness and preparation. The hike typically starts from the Wonnangatta Valley Trail, which can be accessed via Wonnangatta Road. The hike is approximately 20 kilometers one way, and it can take several hours, depending on your pace. Ensure you have adequate supplies, including food, water, and a map, as mobile reception may be limited. Also, please inform someone about your hiking plans for safety.
