Pooley Wines: A Tasmanian Wine Legacy
Experience award-winning cool-climate wines at Pooley Wines, a historic family-owned winery in Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Open daily for tastings.
Pooley Wines is a multi-award-winning, five-star winery in the heart of Tasmania's Coal River Valley, known for its premium cool-climate wines. Founded in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley, the winery has a rich history rooted in a passion for winemaking. The family's commitment spans three generations, with a focus on sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking. The Pooley story began with a modest planting of Riesling and Pinot Noir vines at Cooinda Vale. In 2003, John Pooley and his wife Libby expanded the estate with the purchase of Belmont, a heritage-listed Georgian home near Richmond. This property now houses the cellar door, offering visitors a unique tasting experience in a historic setting. The Butcher's Hill vineyard, established on the Belmont property, produced its first vintage in 2007. Pooley Wines is known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and world-class Riesling. The Coal River Valley's unique terroir contributes to the distinct character of these wines. Visitors to the cellar door can enjoy in-depth, seated tastings, local cheeses, charcuterie boards, and wood-fired pizzas on weekends. The winery's idyllic setting and commitment to quality make it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. Pooley Wines has received numerous accolades, including Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine’s “Best Small Cellar Door” for Southern Tasmania in 2014 and 2015 and the Halliday Wine Companion's 2023 Winery of the Year.
