Discover more about Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge)

Jarrangbarnmi (Koolpin Gorge), often called 'The Jewel' of Kakadu, is a breathtaking gorge carved into the southern region of Kakadu National Park. The area is known for its rugged cliffs, lush greenery, and pristine waters, offering a tranquil escape into the heart of the Australian wilderness. The gorge has significant cultural importance to the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of the land. The name 'Jarrangbarnmi' comes from the Jawoyn words 'jarrang' (flood or big water flow) and 'barn' (rift or gap). Aboriginal art sites can be found in the area, though some are not publicly displayed out of respect for the traditional owners. The Jawoyn people ask that visitors show respect for their country and culture. Visitors can explore the gorge via walking tracks that lead to sparkling plunge pools and waterfalls. The area is home to unique native wildlife, including migratory birds, the hooded parrot, Kakadu dunnart, and giant cave gecko. Keep an eye out for the brightly colored Gouldian finch and the black wallaroo. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the creek, so swimming and water collection are prohibited. Access to Jarrangbarnmi is restricted to a maximum of 40 people at any one time to protect its fragile environment. A permit is required for both day trips and overnight camping, and access is only possible with a high-clearance 4WD vehicle during the dry season.
